An intelligent headlamp system module by LG Innotek (CEO Ung-beom Lee) will receive the Innovations Award at the CES (Consumer Electronic Show) 2013, the world’s large consumer electronics and IT exhibition that will take place in the U.S. City of Las Vegas in January.

The CES Innovations Award is an honor accorded to products with superior technology and design, and the winners are selected through joint review by the Industrial Designers Society of American (IDSA) and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) from among the products to be displayed at CES.

LG Innotek’s product that won the Innovations Award is a high-tech intelligent headlamp system module, which achieves lighting beam optimized for automobile driving, as it integrates monitoring of surroundings through camera and independent controlling of a multi-array LED package.

Notably, the product can automatically control brightness of LED lights and comes in handy for nighttime driving.

For instance, if the vehicle braces for another vehicle approaching in the opposition direction when driving in high-beam mode at night, the lamp automatically senses the approaching vehicle, turns off a portion of LED chips to make the other driver free from glare. Also, the spot-beam function of this product is designed to automatically recognize an object or human and provide spotlighting to the object to preemptively prevent an accident.

Unlike the conventional Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS), LG Innotek’s intelligent headlamp system module is not equipped with separate mechanical AFS motors, and hence is expected to reduce the size and weight of headlamps. These advantages can not only help improve design of automobiles, but also enhance their gas mileage.

An LG Innotek official said, “The honor of receiving the CES Innovations Award with our intelligent headlamp system module is illustration of synergistic effect generated between LG Innotek’s fundamental technology and the business division,” adding, “Through development of fusion and convergence products based on core fundamental technologies, we will continue to step up our drive to boost global competitiveness.”
